Google Ads and SEO don’t compete — they work different shifts

The question nearly always arrives like this: “should we invest in ads or in SEO?” It is a false choice. The two channels are not fighting for the same spot — they answer different moments and run on different clocks. Put them in competition and you end up with one channel running at half speed and the other not yet started.

What each channel does, minus the marketing talk

An ad buys attention now. Stop paying and it stops showing. An organic result is earned over months and keeps bringing in visits after the invoices stop. Neither is better: they are tools with different timescales.

  • Google Ads. Catches people who are already searching for what you sell. It is the fastest channel for checking whether there is demand — and the fastest at burning budget if left unchecked.
  • Meta Ads. It does not catch demand: it creates it. It is for showing the product to people who did not yet know they wanted it.
  • SEO. Built over months. In return, traffic stops being paid for click by click. The rules of the game are published in Google’s guide and change less than people say.

The shifts

In practice, the sequence that has worked best for us is this one, and there is nothing original about it: ads are for learning fast, and SEO is for not having to keep paying for the same traffic.

  1. Months 1 to 3 — buy demand. Search campaigns on a handful of keywords, with a controlled budget. The aim is not to scale: it is to find out which terms bring in real enquiries and which pages lose them.
  2. In parallel — put the house in order. One page per service, speed and Core Web Vitals sorted, a readable structure. Without this, SEO never gets going and the ads pay more for the same click.
  3. Month 3 onwards — earn demand. Content starts targeting the searches the ads have already proven are worth money. It stops being guesswork.
  4. Then — rebalance. As organic grows, paid spend moves to where you do not yet rank.

Ads tell you which words are worth money. SEO makes sure you stop paying for them.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • Ads pointing to the home page. Someone looking for something specific lands somewhere generic and leaves. Every service needs its own page.
  • SEO treated as a bundle of articles. Copy without a technical structure underneath does not climb, however many articles there are.
  • Cutting the ads after the first weak month. Before there is enough data, cutting means wiping out the experiment halfway through.
  • Measuring clicks instead of enquiries. It is the most expensive mistake, and it has its own article: measurement comes first.

What if the budget only stretches to one?

Then start with ads — on one condition: the landing page has to be up to scratch and measurement has to be in place. One well-measured month of campaigns teaches you more about the market than six months of assumptions, and what you learn there still counts for SEO later.

If the website is not up and running yet, the order is different: foundations first, and that decision is explained in website, online shop or custom system. The detail on each channel is under digital marketing, and if you would rather talk before deciding, the diagnostic is free.
